1982 KZ1300 A4 rescue and rebuild

A step by step account of rebuilding a purchased rusty KZ1300. With many parts missing, and what turned out to be a seized engine, it was a big project. The bike was completely stripped down to bare frame, the engine dismantled and everything else had to be rebuild. Also, many parts were missing. It took a great effort to source them, paint, chrome plate, but it was worth it!

Kawasaki KZ1300

I bought a 1982 KZ1300 A4. What was supposed to be a mainly cosmetic and small components fixer upper. It turned out nothing like this. Starting with the engine completely seized, everything else had to be completely done. The bike and the engine were stripped, down to the frame, and the rest is now history. The bike looks fantastic and is an absolute blast and pleasure to ride.

Building a KZ1300 A1 engine from scratch

Another KZ1300 engine assembled - this one from random parts. I literally started with a spare cylinder block and nothing else. Followed up with sourcing screws and bolts, and everything else.

This project, making a complete engine from scratch, started as not a planned event. I accumulated parts making the A4, and when completed, I had a few things in boxes left over. Long story short, I got inspired to build an engine from scratch. The first part was a cylinder block, and an engine head. Both required work, but it was a govd start. My next purchase was a set of engine crank case bolts, then came a crank case! I have completed the build and I am very pleased with how it turned out. Parts sourced from dozens of places, it all came together at the end with great results. This is an account of what it took to make it happen.

Rescue of a chopped 1981 KZ1300 A3

A 1981 A3 model purchased for the frame, but turned out to be a big independant project. It is going to be build ground up to be a beautiful stock KZ1300.

After rebuilding the 1982 A4 model, I was left with many spare parts. Some already serviced, some just sitting in boxes. I took up assembling them into larger complete assemblies. Like a full front and rear end. I also had some engine parts, and that made me think. That was the starting point for the making a new engine from scratch project, mentined above. With time, I thought - why not making a whole new bike! The main part was missing - the frame. So this bike came along, and all things considered, I purchased it for the frame. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a nightmare as the frame had all brackets cut off! There was basically nothing stock left on the bike except wheels and the engine. A total disaster. But I had it. So, it turned into a big and very slow progressing project. Eventually, it will become a stock A3 KZ1300. I have many missing bracket pieces, it's a start.
